Iraq, 1990s. As the country grapples with widespread food shortages, Saddam Hussein orders every school to bake a cake for his birthday. Lamia is chosen to represent her class and must rely on wit and resourcefulness to gather the scarce ingredients – failure is not an option.
Premiering at the Directors’ Fortnight, The President’s Cake won both the Audience Award and the Caméra d’Or for Best First Feature across all Cannes sections.

Hasan Hadi
Iraqi screenwriter and director Hasan Hadi has a background in journalism, production, and teaching at New York University. A 2022 Sundance Lab fellow, he received the Sundance/NHK Award, the SFFILM Rainin Grant, and the Doha Film Institute Fellowship for his debut feature, The President’s Cake.
