Nicholas Ray

Born in 1911

Nicholas Ray was an American film director, screenwriter and actor who died in 1979. He began directing his own films in 1936 and went on to shoot a series of films, including Johnny Guitar (1954), which was a great success at the time. Contacted by Warner Bros for the film adaptation of the book Rebel Without a Cause written by psychiatrist Robert M. Lindner, Ray decided to rewrite the story, as he realised the absurdity of his ideas: The bad guys come from small poor families, the rich are the good guys "It's absolutely wrong, says Ray. It's all of us". James Dean, chosen for the role of the main character, died tragically a few days after the film's premiere, greatly affecting the director. The last months of the latter, were documented by Wim Wenders in Nick's Movie.
