In Los Angeles, AJ, a quiet high school student, meets Kristen. She is passionate about surfing; he loves skateboarding and drawing. They fall deeply in love, and a happy future seems to lie ahead.
But everything changes when Kristen falls ill. Together, they face adversity, carried by the strength of their love, theirfriends, and their newfound shared passion for surfing and the ocean.

Vietnamese-born director Phuong Mai Nguyen graduated from Gobelins and La Poudrière. She co-directed the adaptation of Pénélope Bagieu’s Culottées and has made several short films, including Chez Moi, which was preselected for the César Awards and shortlisted for the Oscars in 2016. She also created the original graphics for Celui qui a deux âmes, winner of the 2017 César Award for Best Animated Short Film. In Waves is her first feature film.
