LA SÉANCE NOUVELLE VAGUE - À Bout de Souffle THE FRENCH NEW WAVE SCREENING - Breathless
Jean-Luc Godard

Breaking all the rules, Breathless (À bout de souffle) became the iconic film of the French New Wave. Based on a true crime story written by François Truffaut, Godard crafted a semi-improvised film, packed with references to American cinema and stylistically daring. For his first feature, he aimed to capture French youth as it truly was. Winner of the 1960 Jean Vigo Prize, the film was an immediate success, catapulting Jean-Paul Belmondo (then still unknown), Jean Seberg, and Godard himself to iconic status.

Jean-Luc Godard
Born in 1930
A film critic for Cahiers du cinéma and a defining director of the French New Wave, Jean-Luc Godard (1930 - 2022) continually pushed the boundaries of cinematic form and storytelling. From Breathless (À Bout de Souffle, 1960) to Contempt (Le Mépris, 1963), and Pierrot le Fou (1965), to Every Man for Himself (Sauve qui peut (la vie), 1980), and New Wave (Nouvelle Vague, 1990) starring Alain Delon, Godard’s work remains groundbreaking.
